002 | Route 38 | Video / Action;
[It's a lovely afternoon on Route 38, just outside of Ecruteak City, and Albert Rosenfield is On A Mission. (All right, well, technically he's on two missions, but he's pretending it's only one mission because the other mission involves being a dogwalker for Coop's Houndour and his own Poochyena, and come on, that's just beneath him, do you know how many degrees he has.) In the week and a half he's spent thus far in Johto, he's read the literature and gotten the relevant explanations from a source he's inclined to trust as reliable, unbelievable though they may be, and so today he's out on the route to investigate the local plant life.
The Gear feed is mostly picking up up-close shots of various shrubs and berries, occasionally directed by a hand covered in a latex glove; it appears Albert is using his Gear's video function as a means of documenting the things he's finding, and every so often he'll snap off a small branch or twist off a berry and deposit it into a plastic baggie for later investigation.
Which is great, except that while he's busy examining shrubs, his Poochyena is currently bounding into the tall grass, having just spotted a wild Paras shuffling along minding its own business. Curious, she gives it a few pokes with its nose, which the Paras only tolerates momentarily before attempting to bid a hasty, skittering retreat from the sudden invasive prodding of this wolfdog in its midst. But Gandhina is having none of that, and after following it a few steps with continued, mounting curiosity, she finally darts down and snaps it up in her jaws, intent on proudly carrying it over to her trainer to show him what she's just found.
The Paras, naturally, does not take kindly to this.
A moment later, a cloud of Poison Powder erupts into the air.]
— The hell?!
[Granted, Albert may not instantly recognize what this cloud is, but he is at least sensible enough to realize that it's probably not something he really wants to be breathing. Ever rational, he prudently covers his nose and mouth and starts bidding a hasty retreat; Gandhina, on the other hand, begins whimpering and struggling but continues holding bravely on while the Paras, still locked in her teeth, starts to wriggle and scratch as it tries to get free.]
Gandhina, drop it!
[But fortunately for Gandhina, Albert isn't the only observer on the scene, and now it's Sheriff's turn to leap into action: first with a sharp, forceful bark that finally seems to shake Gandhina out of her (now poisoned) haze and makes her release the Paras, and then with a well-placed jet of fire that, being ridiculously super-effective against the offending Bug/Grass type, proceeds to drop it like a bad habit.
A moment later, the video goes dark as the Gear is hastily shoved into a pocket, and Albert's muttered cursing can be faintly heard in the moments just before the feed finally switches off.]

[Then there's the fact that it's really, really sunny out. And it puts him in a good mood. Allows him to soak up the heat like a cat on a rooftop, and he feels glad and invigorated from it. He understands that it's a side effect from temporarily being a fire-type, and while he's still worried that will never go away, he can't help but feel pretty content despite things as he strolls the streets of Ecruteak.]
[And at least he's not the only one looking odd, so there's that.]
[Albert is not one of the people who do, though, but that coupled with the brisk pace and generally unhappy face make him easy to spot and Coop goes to meet him for no other reason than that he'd like to.]
[He's very, very happy to have him here, after all.]
[... but why is he carrying the Poochyena?]
[action]
But fortunately for Gandhina, it happens that one of the berry bushes Albert came across was a Pecha Berry bush, and upon double-checking with his guidebook to make sure he was feeding his wolfdog the right thing, he'd made her swallow one to see if it would relieve the poisoning she'd suffered from the Paras.
Turns out, it did.
But just because she's seemingly fine doesn't mean he's going to make her walk all the way back into town, either. It's not like she's got zen training and can mystically will away any potential pain or side effects
like some people he knows, after all. Which is why she's currently in his arms, looking a little bewildered but mostly just tired. It's Sheriff who actually spots Coop first, and greets him with a friendly bark; that, in turn, signals Albert, who first glances over and then alters his course slightly to walk over and see him.]
Aren't you supposed to be in bed?
[ B( ]
[action]
That seems like a waste of time on a fine day like this.
[c:]
[He looks up at Albert with a slight headtilt, looking nothing more than utterly pleasant. Because that's what the day is! Utterly pleasant.]
[He inclines his head slightly towards Gandhina though, both curious and a little concerned.]
Did you run into trouble?
[action]
[The long flight to Ecruteak had not been one of his fonder experiences, but that had been nothing compared to his thoughts on walking into Coop's hotel room and seeing firsthand the state he was in back when they'd first arrived.
Gandhina, conscious of the attention from her master's friend, wriggles a little in Albert's arms in response, but he doesn't put her down. She may be healed of the poison damage, but all those scratches she took to the head are a different story.]
Deputy Andy here found some kind of poison bug in the tall grass and decided to investigate it. With her face.
[action]
A pokémon with fungi on its back?
[He asks without missing a beat, completely ignoring that other remark. Yeah, he'd felt absolutely terrible, and sometimes he still does. But he's fine right now and that's what's most important.]
[action]
That's right. Orange carapace, about a foot long. Pair of chelipeds in the front, two more sets of legs in the back, couple of red-hatted mushrooms on top. She picked it up and it released some kind of spore cloud; didn't hit me, but she took it front and center.
[At this, Gandhina thumps her tail a little halfheartedly, as if concurring with Albert's rapid summation.]
[action]
Sounds like a Paras to me. Their spores can be poisonous.
[They can do a few other things too, after all, but he'd imagine that poison is what hit Gandhina the hardest. None of the other afflictions look like they apply.]

Hey, great minds think alike?]
Yeah, I'm on it, thanks.
He may know nothing else but he knows nature.]
Good.
Why were you taking branches off of those bushes? None of those are edible for humans and a lot of Pokémon would rather eat other plants.

And here I was hoping that you wouldn’t have the ssssense to move away from that!

Well, we can't all be as dumb as you, now, can we?
[He's done worse, okay? Like run into live grenades. Or retreat because he's winning.]
[Cobra, you magnificent snakemanthing.]
So what do you want?
It's not going to be happening any other time, either, if that'll save you the trouble of turning up like a bad penny every time I so much as blow my nose.

He does recognize the voice when it shows up on his 'gear, though, and video's content does worry him.]
Hey, uhmn-- [Crap, what would be a good way to refer to this guy?] --Mr. Rosenfield? I think that's it. Is everyone okay? It looked like your dog took that Poison Powder pretty badly.
On the downside, Hiccup is also a teenager, and Albert has a long history of poor encounters with teenagers, largely because most of them are stupid self-centered punks who make terrible life choices and also occasionally get themselves murdered, which is frustrating to say the least, despite also keeping him in a job.
But back on the upside again, Coop's vouched for him, so that's...something. Granted, Coop's also a guy who would offer a beatific pardon to someone who tried to turn him into Swiss cheese, so that isn't exactly saying much. But it's more than saying nothing at all.]
Yeah, she got it right in the face. Damn dog doesn't know when to leave well enough alone.
She was probably just curious, or trying to get you to notice or praise her. [Toothless had done some silly things in the past for those reasons.] Do you have antidotes or potions with you?
He'll settle for treating him with mildly — mildly — less disdain. For the moment.]
You ever hear what curiosity did to the cat?
[He's not touching the part about praising her. He gets enough of that from Coop.]
Guidebook says some of these bushes produce berries that neutralize poison. No telling what kind of dosage she'd need after an attack like that, but I fed her a few and I'm keeping an eye on it.
At the information, Hiccup nods.] That's good. She should be fine, poison-wise, then. You should also look for the round, blue ones or ones like this. [He ducks out of sight for a second, but there's a Sitrus berry in his hand when he returns.] They'll give pokemon more health and energy, but I don't know if they grow where you are.
And if so, can he get the formula and lace the entire Twin Peaks reservoir with it somehow?]
Hang on.
[He's going into his bag for some of the samples he collected earlier.]
Hold that up closer to the camera. Two fingers.
[He mimes pinching something small and round between his thumb and forefinger.]
