002 | Route 38 | Video / Action;

[It's a lovely afternoon on Route 38, just outside of Ecruteak City, and Albert Rosenfield is On A Mission. (All right, well, technically he's on two missions, but he's pretending it's only one mission because the other mission involves being a dogwalker for Coop's Houndour and his own Poochyena, and come on, that's just beneath him, do you know how many degrees he has.) In the week and a half he's spent thus far in Johto, he's read the literature and gotten the relevant explanations from a source he's inclined to trust as reliable, unbelievable though they may be, and so today he's out on the route to investigate the local plant life.

The Gear feed is mostly picking up up-close shots of various shrubs and berries, occasionally directed by a hand covered in a latex glove; it appears Albert is using his Gear's video function as a means of documenting the things he's finding, and every so often he'll snap off a small branch or twist off a berry and deposit it into a plastic baggie for later investigation.

Which is great, except that while he's busy examining shrubs, his Poochyena is currently bounding into the tall grass, having just spotted a wild Paras shuffling along minding its own business. Curious, she gives it a few pokes with its nose, which the Paras only tolerates momentarily before attempting to bid a hasty, skittering retreat from the sudden invasive prodding of this wolfdog in its midst. But Gandhina is having none of that, and after following it a few steps with continued, mounting curiosity, she finally darts down and snaps it up in her jaws, intent on proudly carrying it over to her trainer to show him what she's just found.

The Paras, naturally, does not take kindly to this.

A moment later, a cloud of Poison Powder erupts into the air.]

— The hell?!

[Granted, Albert may not instantly recognize what this cloud is, but he is at least sensible enough to realize that it's probably not something he really wants to be breathing. Ever rational, he prudently covers his nose and mouth and starts bidding a hasty retreat; Gandhina, on the other hand, begins whimpering and struggling but continues holding bravely on while the Paras, still locked in her teeth, starts to wriggle and scratch as it tries to get free.]

Gandhina, drop it!

[But fortunately for Gandhina, Albert isn't the only observer on the scene, and now it's Sheriff's turn to leap into action: first with a sharp, forceful bark that finally seems to shake Gandhina out of her (now poisoned) haze and makes her release the Paras, and then with a well-placed jet of fire that, being ridiculously super-effective against the offending Bug/Grass type, proceeds to drop it like a bad habit.

A moment later, the video goes dark as the Gear is hastily shoved into a pocket, and Albert's muttered cursing can be faintly heard in the moments just before the feed finally switches off.]

[All things considered, Coop's been okay lately. It's a while ago now since he just about collapsed from whatever had him make fire, and he's recovered pretty nicely from it. The mutations are still there, of course, but they don't bother him as much as they did before, and although he's still got a fever things are a lot more managable on that front as well.]

[Then there's the fact that it's really, really sunny out. And it puts him in a good mood. Allows him to soak up the heat like a cat on a rooftop, and he feels glad and invigorated from it. He understands that it's a side effect from temporarily being a fire-type, and while he's still worried that will never go away, he can't help but feel pretty content despite things as he strolls the streets of Ecruteak.]

[And at least he's not the only one looking odd, so there's that.]

[Albert is not one of the people who do, though, but that coupled with the brisk pace and generally unhappy face make him easy to spot and Coop goes to meet him for no other reason than that he'd like to.]

[He's very, very happy to have him here, after all.]

[... but why is he carrying the Poochyena?]

[And Coop crouches down to greet his dog, in an open invitation for Sheriff to come right over. He's normally a bit more strict in his pet training, but ever since the symptoms started he's had a much easier time understanding his own fire-types, and Sheriff is one of the pokémon he's much more in tune with on an intuitive level now than before. So when the Houndour comes up to him he strokes a hand over his back and pats his neck with the other, but doesn't actually greet him with words. It's a thing that doesn't seem much needed right now.]

That seems like a waste of time on a fine day like this.

[c:]

[He looks up at Albert with a slight headtilt, looking nothing more than utterly pleasant. Because that's what the day is! Utterly pleasant.]

[He inclines his head slightly towards Gandhina though, both curious and a little concerned.]

Did you run into trouble?

[Coop ruffles Sheriff's fur for a bit longer before he stands and the Houndour obediently sits down next to his feet. He can't help a hint of a smile at the reference to Andy - not because it's funny, because it really isn't, but because he's been so far removed from that town he's started to forget about the people and what happened there. A reminder, no matter what form, seems like a nice thing.]

A pokémon with fungi on its back?

[He asks without missing a beat, completely ignoring that other remark. Yeah, he'd felt absolutely terrible, and sometimes he still does. But he's fine right now and that's what's most important.]

That cloud can poison Pokémon. If any of the ones with you look sick, that pink berry you picked will heal them.

[Coop looks at the Poochyena with great sympathy.]

Sounds like a Paras to me. Their spores can be poisonous.

[They can do a few other things too, after all, but he'd imagine that poison is what hit Gandhina the hardest. None of the other afflictions look like they apply.]

Might have to do with his training, too.

[Spoken as a matter of fact. While Coop does train his pokémon ... well, at times, he doesn't hold it against Albert to have shown so little interest in the phenomenom and in fact wouldn't have expected him to. Albert is the kind of person to do it himself or not at all. Not to mention the fighting aspect - it took Coop a fair bit to warm up to himself.]

[Oh, and a quick look Sheriff's way. Imagine that: Albert not only complimented him, but his namesake. c:]

What else did you find?

[Because this little misadventure doesn't seem to have ended too badly other than a slightly scruffed up Houndour and a tired Poochyena (who Coop will reach out to pet lightly because she looks like she could use it, poor thing) and there were other reasons for Albert to go and poke around than just Pecha berries and Parases. The latter seemed quite unexpected , anyway.]

[Haha, "great minds", right. XD;

He may know nothing else but he knows nature.]

Good.

Why were you taking branches off of those bushes? None of those are edible for humans and a lot of Pokémon would rather eat other plants.

No, there's just no reason to. If you want food you should look for ferns and some of the small leafy plants.

[Hi, Albert. Remember this guy? He’s cackling at the cloud, and then glaring when the feed moves away from it.]

And here I was hoping that you wouldn’t have the ssssense to move away from that!

[Because even Apollo can he wasn't just breaking branches for fun.]

[A look that's mostly wasted due to Apollo's limited experience with reading other humans.]

You should wait until they have seeds then. That would make it easier to grow them.
